HSI XII started when Nick and Powell left Kansas City early in the morning to drive to the Springfield airport to pick up Sheebz. The problem is the weather in DFW was delaying all flights. Nick and Powell stopped at an IHOP and killed time. Sheebz’ flight finally arrived and the three of them drove straight to Pointe Royale Golf Course for a practice round. It was an decent course and a good practice round.

After the round, we went and checked into the rental house. It was an awesome four bedroom house with a nice patio in the back. Nick headed to the Branson airport to pick up JJ. When they returned, the four of us went down to Branson Landing to find a spot for the champions dinner. We ended up at Cantina Laredowhere we enjoyed some good Mexican food. I remember my drink, mango margarita, and our waitress, Rhonda. After dinner we walked down to Bass Pro Shop to buy gear for our Friday fishing trip. After a stop at Wal-Mart to pick up groceries, we went back to the house and hung out for a while. We went to bed fairly early so that we could get some rest before our first round of HSI XII.

The first tee time of HSI XII was at Branson Creek Golf Club at 8:03 a.m. This was a great starting location because the course was a five minute drive from our house. This was a really great course but the clubhouse left something to be desired. The clubhouse was a temporary trailer and the carts were kept in a tent. We realized later that this course had saved money on the clubhouse so that they could spend it on the golf course. Like past HSI events, we played the first three rounds as partner play. This first round pitted Sheebz and Powell against Nick and JJ. This was a really nice course. The team of Nick/JJ really cleaned up on points.

After this round we drove to Payne Stewart Golf Course and had some lunch. The clubhouse at this course was really nice. It had a bunch of memorabilia from Payne Stewart and his career. Our round started at 2:40 p.m. and this course was absolutely awesome. The very first hole, a dramatic downhill par 4, was a hole that we all remembered. This course was really tough and gave us our worst scores of the week at an average of 99.75. Nick/Powell just barely beat Sheebz/JJ in partner play.
After golf we went back to the house for a home cooked meal. We grilled up ribeyes on the “electronic” grill, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, and red wine. That evening was a night of cigars and scotch. A very relaxing evening to finish our first day of HSI XII.

Today our first round started at 8:10 a.m. at started with a round at Ledgestone Golf Club. It was a great morning as the temperature was a little crisp. It was a perfect morning for golf. This course wasn’t as nice as the first two, but it was still very good. We got out the iPad and played some music during this round. The partners were Sheebz/Nick vs. JJ/Powell. Sheebz/Nick won the skins game during this round and it was here where Sheebz went from fourth to second, largely due to the record 11 extras he scored on this round.
When the round was over, we went back to the house to unload the golf clubs and load up the fishing gear. Nick had all the gear that we needed and it was well planned. We went down to Scotty’s Trout Dock and picked up our rental boat. We then went just a few hundred yards away on Lake Taneycomo to try to catch some fish. Our goal was to catch enough fish to have a fish fry on Saturday night. When Nick was showing us what to do, he caught a fish within the first two minutes. After that, all of us started bringing fish in. It was a fantastic time. We ended up keeping about a dozen trout and we threw several back.
We stayed on the lake for about four hours. Nick and JJ cleaned our fish and then we headed back to the house. It had been a long day. We ordered some pizza that was delivered to the house and watched the Royals’ game on TV. It was a very early night. I believe that everybody was in bed asleep by 10 p.m. It had been a great day and we were all very tired.

This morning we started individual play in HSI XII at our 7:40 a.m. tee time at Murder Rock Golf Club. This was a great course that was designed (or his name was on the course, at least) by John Daly. The views from this course were incredible as the course was high on a hill and you could see for miles. The course was really cool. At the end of our first round of individual play, Sheebz was leading Nick by a single point for first place and Powell was one point ahead of JJ for third. Sheebz’ surge was largely due to his one under par 34 on the back nine. After our round we stayed at Murder Rock and had lunch in the clubhouse.

Our final round of HSI XII was scheduled right back where HSI XII started,Branson Creek Golf Club. This was a great place to finish as we were all familiar with the course. We teed off at 1:45 p.m. and it was obvious that this would be a very slow round because of the many slow groups in front of us. There were two very close races going on during the final round: one between Nick and Sheebz to win the trophy and one between JJ and Powell to avoid the pink belt. We played good golf here with our lowest average for the week and Nick posted the lowest round in HSI history with a +9 score of 80. However, Sheebz took the lead for good with a win on the par 3 ninth hole and ended up winning the trophy. On hole fifteen, Powell hit a rabbit putt to take a one point lead over JJ and that is how it ended. Sheebz took home the trophy for the first time since Colorado in 2009 and JJ took home the pink belt.
We headed back to the house and fried up the fish that we had caught the day before. Nick did a great job showing us how to catch the fish, cleaning the fish, and then frying it up. For the rest of that evening, we sat on the back patio and had a great time swapping stories. Lots of drinks, cigars, and laughs were shared at the table that evening. It was our latest night of the week and we didn’t want it to end.

It was time for HSI XII to end. We got up in the morning and cleaned up the house. After the trophy presentation, Nick delivered JJ to the Branson airport. Then Sheebz, Powell, and Nick left the house and headed to the Springfield airport. Nick and Powell dropped Sheebz at the airport and then headed back towards KC.
HSI XIII plans
Sheebz is on the hook to plan HSI XIII. We have decided that mid May is a good time for the trip, but Sheebz will have to do a lot of planning in order to match the fun we had at HSI XII.
